Friday Flings 2011 May 13th, 2011
It’s here again! I traipsed downtown to the Friday Fling under the pavilions today…and enjoyed the sun! The weather was perfect and there were lots of people. The Palmer High Jazz Choir performed a few selections as well as the local ConFusion Jazz Combo.
Returning vendors like Tundra Comics and local gardens/nurseries attracted many browsers. Newer businesses like Moose Bites Personal Chefs and other local artists also caught many eyes.
Most people were just out to soak up the sun and see what Palmer businesses had to offer. Downtown is bustling with tourists, cyclists and families out for walks. I was able to catch up with many people I knew from high school, families from my church and even an old neighbor. I love this community!

Friday Flings will run through August 19th, every friday from 11am to 6pm.

Matanuska-Susitna College April 11th, 2011
If you were to peer down through the clouds from the top of Pioneer Peak at night you would survey a sea of lights with a dark spot in the center, which in turn is illuminated by a small set of buildings in the middle. That vision is the Matanuska-Susitna College which sits on a thousand acres of primeval Alaskan wilderness, which in turn is surrounded by the fastest growing community in Alaska.
Nearly 2,000 students attend classes in a modern and expanding facility. The students come here to transform their dreams into realities. An energetic and talented faculty and staff work hard to create a positive atmosphere to facilitate the development of scholars and workers for the future of Alaska. There are few places in the world as majestic as this valley. There are few universities as affordable as this school. The Matanuska-Susitna Campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage is the gem in the statewide system of higher education. We welcome new students and visitors and look forward to many years of growth and opportunity in this borough.

Palmer Thrifters Rock! February 24th, 2011

I had the pleasure of checking out the newest thrift store in town, brought to you by Church on the Rock. They opened in November 2010 and the store is a big hit. Thrifters Rock is staffed by volunteers that are paid with store credit! If you are interested in volunteering, please call 745-ROCK to set up your shift.
They are located next to Valley Harvest Church at: You can find a wide selection in clothes, shoes, toys, games, movies, books, small appliances and more. The decor is very nice with freshly painted walls and well maintained. This thrift store is very clean and tidy; I appreciated the fact that each section has its own area which is clearly marked. Thrifters Rock also has an active facebook page where you can find the deals of the day! Church on the Rock Palmer meets in Sherrod Elementary school at 11am on Sundays. The store is their community project to raise funds for a Palmer church building. Once the goal is met and building location secured, all future proceeds will go to community projects! This business really wants to give back to the community!
