Colony Days in Full Swing! June 12th, 2010

Categories: Around Palmer, Events

This morning  I wandered down in front of the Downtown Palmer Plaza to watch the annual Colony Day’s Parade. This was one of the longest parades Palmer has ever seen! Being an election year, there were numerous political floats but also several dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of Palmer’s original colonists.

There are still tons of events going on around Palmer between now and Sunday evening. Go down to the Friday Fling area for an open air market all Saturday and Sunday, check out local businesses for great sales or check out the specific events for the whole family! For a full list, click here.

Below are just a few photos taken this morning.

2010 Palmer Friday Fling Begins May 14th, 2010

Tundra Comics at the Palmer Fling

Tundra Comics at the Palmer Fling

Today was the start of the Friday Fling. It was a little chilly and breezy and that tended to hurt attendance. But, Zach Lanphier was hard at work selling Tundra Comics. This is a great comic book, I like to steal my sons Tundra books and chuckle at the crazy humor. Zach appears to be a good rep for Tundra Comics.

People were packing up when I arrived at about 3PM. The wind was a little tough on the tents. But still, there was plenty of Made in Alaska on hand. Every thing from wood carvings, to fresh bread, to fresh vegetables.

I ran into Steve Carrington there…he was recently hired by the city of Palmer. Apparently he has two jobs at the city, Librarian and Director of Community Services. He had his community service hat on at the Palmer Fling and informed me that the brand new restroom facilities are open and almost finished behind the Palmer Visitors Center. I’m sure the summer bus tourists will welcome that. Speaking of buses, apparently there have already been some early season buses full of tourists check out the city of Palmer.

All in a day’s…play!

Today was a marvelous day. Clear skies, above zero temperatures, and (oh, yeah) Colony Christmas!
Below are just a few of the awesome events today, documented in photos. I also threw in a few scenic ones taken today as well. Enjoy!

Why would someone want to live off Wolverine Road? Because they want a view like the one below!

Old Matanuska River Bridge

Craft Fair at the Borough Gym

Musk Ox Farm’s entry in the Gingerbread House Contest

These two girls sat atop their transportation to view the Parade of Lights.

There were all sorts of entries in the parade

Even an entry from our local waste removal services

The fireworks show was fabulous! These two photos just don’t do it justice…
